The Kilcoo-Minto 15'7" canoe is a completely unique, proprietary design based on the now-lost Minto Marine 16’ canoe that was used extensively by summer camps and cottagers in Ontario's Haliburton Highlands. The Minto was built in Minden, primarily by May Minto, until the mid-1980s.
Kilcoo Camp (a venerable, Toronto-based private summer camp located near Minden, Ontario), commissioned the return of the Minto to rebuild their dying original fleet (which was comprised almost exclusively by Minto canoes, with several Chestnuts).
To replace Kilcoo’s aging fleet of antique cedar plank and canvas canoes with their modern equivalent, the “Kilcoo-Minto” was reverse-engineered from a near perfect original (one of the last four May ever built, all bought and still owned by a Kilcoo Camp Alumni), and faired by renowned marine architect Steve Killing to perfect its hull lines, stability, and handling. From Killing's plans a new mould was built, a new fleet was created, and May Minto's canoes once again glide through the water.
Despite its elegant shape and seemingly shallow depth, the Kilcoo is very stable and easy to paddle – something Kilcoo campers have known for over 50 years! It's a gently-rounded bottom, narrow-entry symmetrical hull with a slight rocker and little tumblehome (full specifications above). Great for beginners and experts alike, the Kilcoo-Minto is an excellent all-around boat that not only performs during recreational paddling and tripping on both flat and white water, but also excels during soloing.
There's a lot that goes into a GLBW custom canoe - premium materials, space, time, your hopes and dreams, and a builder's pain (ha you thought we were going to say love)!
